The brief for this house was for a Japanese style Certified Passive House. This meant the incorporation of several interesting features such as the Engawa (verandah), Furo (Japanese bathroom), Tatami room, and Genkan (shoe storage). The brief called for a house which filled the majority of the site, and pushed the envelop to the limits of the district plan - creating an interesting building form. The requirement to stay within the site set backs aided the development of an energy efficient compact form. The Engawa added shading which avoids the house overheating and maintains the requirements of Passive House design.
